My comment on
believeordoubt's site.
Mainly for me, at this point in my life, it's about trying to find a
productive place in the fray of passionate nonsense from both sides. I
do think the proverbial horse is quite dead, but the cultural
management crisis is not. One needs a purpose in life, and a calling if
you will, and "hey, here's one" seems to work well enough for some of
us that have the background and the skills to deal with it. I don't
fault the apatheists at all from just walking away and forgetting about
it (if they can even get away from it in this culture). The "debate" is
a necessary courtesy that should be taken seriously insofar as that is
possible. Many people do need help in their subjective journeys on the
beliefscape that may not really reflect accurately "where things are
really at" all things considered (and I'm actually talking more about
atheists than theists who don't want help). But they are wherever they
are and pretending like they are somewhere else is stupid. If "Big
Religion" ceased to be an issue, I'd be happy with that (unlike
Hitchens apparently) and just do other things. It makes sense though to
embrace your place in history wherever that happens to be though.
"Error correction" needs to be a staple of any healthy society and
whatever the hot error is, is whatever the focus is naturally going to
be.
